What Is an Oxford House?

An Oxford House is a rented family-style home for people recovering from alcohol or drug use. Every house is chartered by Oxford House, Inc. and follows the same three conditions: it is run democratically by its residents, it pays its own way, and anyone who drinks or uses drugs must leave. There is no staff, no treatment program and no set length of stay; residents can remain as long as they stay sober and pay their share of the household costs.

How do you get into an Oxford House?

Find a house with an opening on the official vacancy directory, submit an application, and interview with the current residents, who vote on new members. Most houses list a regular interview time.

Oxford House or another sober living home?

Oxford Houses suit people who want independence and peer accountability at a lower cost. If you want house managers, structured programming or clinical support, compare monitored and supervised options in our sober living directory and read how to choose a sober living home.
