Recovery Meetings Explained: AA, NA, SMART Recovery & More

Not all recovery meetings are the same. Here's a plain-English guide to AA, NA, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery and others — how they differ, what to expect, and how to find the right fit.

Regular meetings are one of the most consistent predictors of lasting recovery — they provide community, accountability, and a place to be honest. But "go to meetings" can feel confusing when there are so many kinds. This guide breaks down the main types of recovery meetings, how they differ, and how to find the one that fits you.

Why Meetings Matter

Whatever the format, recovery meetings do a few essential things: they reduce isolation, offer peer support from people who understand, provide structure and routine, and hold you gently accountable. Most sober living homes require attending a set number of meetings per week for exactly these reasons — see our guide to sober living house rules. The specific program matters less than showing up consistently to one that works for you.

12-Step Programs (AA & NA)

The most widespread and available meetings in the world.

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) — for alcohol. Founded in 1935, built on the 12 Steps, sponsorship, and a spiritual (not religious) framework of surrender and service.
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA) — the same 12-Step model, for any drug addiction.

What to expect: free meetings almost everywhere, in person and online. Members share their experience, and newcomers are welcomed. You get a sponsor to guide you through the steps. If the word "God" gives you pause, know that AA/NA frame it as a "higher power of your own understanding." These are the easiest meetings to find, anytime, anywhere.

SMART Recovery

A secular, science-based alternative to the 12 Steps.

What it is: SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) uses tools from cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational techniques rather than steps or sponsorship. The focus is on building motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and feelings, and living a balanced life.

Who it fits: people who prefer a practical, self-empowerment approach over a spiritual one, and who like concrete tools. Meetings are free, in person and online.

Refuge Recovery & Recovery Dharma

Buddhist-inspired, mindfulness-based recovery.

What it is: these programs use meditation, mindfulness, and Buddhist principles to work with the roots of addiction and craving. No higher power required — the emphasis is on awareness, compassion, and community.

Who it fits: people drawn to meditation and a mindfulness-based path.

Other Options

  • Women for Sobriety — a program designed specifically around the needs of women in recovery.
  • LifeRing — secular, present-focused peer support.
  • Celebrate Recovery — a Christ-centered, faith-based program (see our guide on faith-based sober living).
  • In The Rooms and other online communities — large libraries of virtual meetings, useful when in-person isn't possible or while traveling.

How to Choose

There's no single "right" program — the best one is the one you'll actually attend. A few tips:

  • Try several. Visit different meetings and formats; they vary a lot even within the same program.
  • Give it more than one visit. One meeting isn't a fair test — try a few before deciding.
  • Mix and match. Many people combine approaches — a 12-Step meeting plus SMART tools, for example.
  • Use apps to find them. Recovery apps make meeting-finding easy anywhere — see our roundup of the best sobriety apps.

Consistency Over Perfection

The research is clear that *regular* engagement matters more than which program you pick. Find a meeting you don't dread, go often, and let the community become part of your routine. Paired with a stable, sober living environment, regular meetings are one of the strongest foundations for long-term recovery.

Build Recovery on Solid Ground

Meetings work best alongside a stable, substance-free place to live. If you need that foundation, verified recovery housing is a good place to start.
