FARR Certified Sober Living Homes in Florida — What FARR Means and How to Find One
Florida has one of the largest recovery communities in the US. FARR certification is the state's quality standard for sober living homes. Here's what it means and how to find a certified home near you.
Florida is home to one of the largest and most active recovery communities in the United States. Cities like Delray Beach, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale have developed dense ecosystems of treatment centers, sober living homes, and recovery support services. With that concentration comes both incredible resources and — historically — serious quality concerns.
FARR certification exists to help people find trustworthy homes in Florida's complex recovery landscape.
What is FARR?
FARR stands for the Florida Association of Recovery Residences. It is Florida's NARR-affiliated organization responsible for certifying, supporting, and advocating for quality recovery residences across the state.
Founded in 2011, FARR is the recognized state certification body and works closely with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). FARR-certified homes have been inspected and verified to meet defined standards for safety, ethics, and quality of support.
Why FARR Certification Matters in Florida
Florida's recovery housing industry grew extremely rapidly in the 2010s, and with that growth came serious problems — including what became known as the "Florida shuffle," where predatory operators exploited residents for insurance billing purposes. State legislators responded with stronger regulations, and FARR became the credible standard separating legitimate homes from bad actors.
Choosing a FARR-certified home in Florida means:
- The home has been inspected by an independent reviewer
- Operators have completed required training
- The home meets minimum standards for resident rights, safety, and support
- There is an accountability mechanism if problems arise
FARR Certification Levels
FARR certifies homes at four levels aligned with the national NARR framework:
Level I — Peer Run: Resident-led home with minimal formal structure. House manager is typically a peer in recovery. Best for individuals with substantial recovery time who need affordable sober housing.
Level II — Monitored: Paid or volunteer house manager provides oversight and accountability. Drug testing, meeting requirements, clear house rules. Most common type of sober living in Florida.
Level III — Supervised: Trained staff provide supervision. Clinical services available through formal referral partnerships. More robust programming.
Level IV — Service Provider: Licensed clinical staff on-site. Operates in close coordination with clinical treatment.

Always ask a home directly for their FARR certification number and verify it independently.
What FARR Does NOT Cover
FARR certification speaks to the quality and ethics of the home's operation. It does not guarantee:
- That you or your loved one will achieve long-term sobriety
- The quality of individual clinical treatment (handled by DCF-licensed treatment providers)
- Specific outcomes
